Unlike most other means-tested benefits, the Standard Minimum Guarantee is not simply uprated by CPI inflation each year — legislation requires it to rise at least in line with earnings growth. This is why the year-on-year increase does not always match the CPI-based percentage applied to Universal Credit or JSA in the same tax year: 2025/26's 5.9% increase, for example, ran ahead of that year's general CPI-linked uprating to keep pace with wage growth.
